The cougar (Puma concolor), also commonly known as the mountain lion, puma, or catamount, is a large felid of the subfamily Felinae native to the Americas.

    Malosma laurina is a large, rounded evergreen shrub or small tree growing 10–15 feet tall. It is the only species of the genus Prunus native to the Santa Monica Mountains that divide the Los Angeles basin from the San Fernando Valley, California.

    It blooms in clusters of lavender or lavender-tinted white flowers which have five reflexed lobes that extend down away from the blossom. It also attracts bees when flowering.

    Salvia leucophylla (Purple sage, Gray sage) is an aromatic sage native to the southern coastal mountain ranges of California and Baja California. The main trunk can fork close to the ground, making it look like two trees that have grown together, then diverged. This deciduous oak requires year-round access to groundwater. It is all black with iridescent feathers, and from beak to tail, it measures and average 16–20 inches (almost half of which is tail!). It remains in some of its original range, but local populations are vulnerable to extirpation by coyotes and domestic animals.

    The branches terminate in bunches of white tubular flowers five mm diameter, with five petals and long stamens. In July, it seemed that every other week a ribbon was cut on another new mountain bike trail. The ride down is great.

    The California ground squirrel (Otospermophilus beecheyi), is a common and easily observed ground squirrel of the western United States and the Baja California Peninsula; it is common in Oregon and California and its range has relatively recently extended into Washington and northwestern Nevada.

    Toyon is a prominent component of the coastal sage scrub plant community, and is a part of drought-adapted chaparral and mixed oak woodland habitats. This common shrub is native to the southwestern United States and northwestern Mexico, where it grows on scrubby slopes and in chaparral and dry washes in a number of habitats.

    Corvus brachyrhynchos, American crow, is a large passerine bird species of the family Corvidae.     The adult acorn woodpecker has a brownish-black head, back, wings and tail, white forehead, throat, belly and rump. It has been the official the state bird of California since 1931. While there are reports of coyotes attacking and killing a person, these types of incidents are extremely rare. Compared with the eastern gray squirrel S. carolinensis or the eastern fox squirrel (which have been introduced into its native range), these squirrels are shy, and will generally run up a tree and give a hoarse chirping call when disturbed. It can be cultivated for its seeds, which are commonly used as a spice. Its a little washed out from all the rain this winter and spring.     Calochortus plummerae is a species of mariposa lily known by the common name Plummer's mariposa lily. The seed was a main ingredient of a staple food, pinole. The blue was spreading up my left hand as I moved the gearstick into ‘park’ mode outside the hotel in Embarcadero, just underneath the San Francisco- Oakland Bay bridge. Most Mountain Bike Trail centres apply a grade system to their trails and, although they can be a useful guide, they aren't always consistent from one centre to the next. Cruscuta californica tends to be mostly partial to buckwheats and sages.

      Rhus ovata, also known as sugar sumac or sugar bush, is an evergreen shrub to small tree that grows in chaparral in dry canyons and south-facing slopes.  The plant is not typically ingested unless other forage is unavailable, or the plant is incorporated into hay. 

      Tips for prevention:

      The secret is just to ride it like a mountain bike and not a road bike.
    • If you think you have come in contact with poison oak, immediately wash the area with soap and cold water.
